A Thousand Words

I know it’s hard for a lot of people to really “get” what it is that we are doing. Not only hard to understand why, but hard to visualize what is literally going to happen. Or maybe that’s just me? To tell the truth, I think my mind’s eye needs glasses. The Mr has lots of grand (yet tiny 😉) ideas, and vision enough for both of us, but I think he got tired of that blank stare I tend to give him when he describes exactly how things are going to look.
So he did what any self-respecting designer would do: he designed detailed, fully-furnished renderings of our new living room/dining room/kitchen space. Not only does this help me to see The Mr’s full vision, it also helps us to finalize our plans and know how our furniture and appliances will fit. And it’s been an ideal winter project for him to work on while it’s been too cold be accomplishing anything in the Spartan.

This view includes our “front” door, the main entrance to Etta. The details amaze me! Some of them are actual pictures of my Fieast dishes, blender, etc. Notice the pattern we laid out for the floor tiles? The Mr took pics of the 3 colors and individually “laid” them in here for me to see the full effect. Have I mentioned before that he’s a keeper?

The “port side” elevation woukd be your view walking through the front door. We’ve since realized that our current sofa sleeper will not clear the mini-split (HVAC) system that we want once it’s unfolded, so it will have to change. But it’s much better to have realized this on paper now than when our first overnight guest shows up later!

If you have any questions about our plans, please ask! 😃

One last thing…being inspired by the fun throw pillows on the fictious couch, picked up some coordinating fabrics and tried my hand at making a pillow! I’m pretty happy with the results. 🤗

    1. Thanks, Bob! The Mr did a fantastic job with them. 🙂 We’ve altered the kitchen floor plan to allow for modern appliances (including washer/dryer), but that’s it. Everything else will be in line with the original layout. We’re fortunate that Etta still has all of the original casework in the bedrooms, and the bathroom is completely original as well.
Are you a Spartan owner as well?

      1. I am indeed a Spartan owner. I purchased a 1956 Executive Mansion from the place you refer to as the ‘Spartan Honeyhole’ 5 years ago and have been making slow progress on it since. Mine was all original, including appliances, except for a slightly newer furnace, but missing all the original furniture.
May I continue a conversation with you and the Mr via e-mail?

  1. Hello,
I was curious if you finished the Spartan remodeling Etta? I just stumbled onto your blog and was curious after reading all your entertaining posts! My husband and I just bought a 1956 Spartan this past weekend and I will start the remodel soon.

I would love to see pictures of your remodel and any helpful advice you might have to a newbie Spartan owner. Thanks.

    1. Well Anita, I wish we had a bevy of remodel pics to send your way, but truth be told, we never finished Etta. We sold the Spartan sometime in 2016/2017 to a family in Texas who had similar plans to live in her (it’s crazy that I can’t even stamp a solid YEAR on that fact!). Unfortunately, we haven’t kept in touch with them. We then bought an even smaller camper, sold our house and spent 2 years traveling the globe. Obviously, not solely in the camper. 😉 Looking back, we’ve realized we were able to experience the world in 2018-2020 in a way that hasn’t been possible since then. It was an incredible time for us all, but truly invaluable to our kiddo who was ages 7-9 while we traveled.

Best of luck to your in your new Spartan adventure!

      1. Thank you for your response!

I understand how plans change and you need to go in a new direction. We started building a house years ago, dug a hole for a basement and that was it…. That monster hole stayed in our yard for 10 years. We finally filled it in a few weeks ago. Sometimes you have to give up on one plan to move forward with a new plan. The important thing is you were able to travel and experience the world as a family. That is awesome!

        Congratulations on your travels!
